Memo

Four Steps to Supporting Same-Sex Relationship Recognition

Author: Rachel Laser, Scott Winship, and Michael Earls
In The Culture Program

Abstract

A document highlighting key insights for winning support for same-sex relationship recognition in America.

Description

This memo reveals four key insights on gay and lesbian issues: public opinion regarding gays and lesbians is largely warming; a large segment of the population (the “Grays”) is torn between wanting to be fair and just and their lingering discomfort with gays and lesbians; senior citizens and married couples should be targeted with tailored outreach; and Americans must be persuaded that moving forward on gay and lesbian rights represents progress for the nation. These insights, gained through both original qualitative and quantitative public opinion research, provide the framework for progressives to advance same-sex relationship recognition and make progress on other gay and lesbian issues.
