Insights on the Middle Class - A New Third Way Poll

Author: Anne Kim and Jim Kessler
In The Middle Class Program

Abstract

This document describes the results of a poll on the middle class and the economy commissioned by Third Way from Global Strategy Group.

Description

A new Third Way poll finds that even in tough times, middle class Americans are still overwhelmingly success-oriented. In August, the vast majority of Americans remained far less worried about losing their homes to foreclosure or losing their jobs to China than they were about seeing their aspirations slip away: paying for their children’s college education, saving for a comfortable retirement, maintaining their health care coverage, caring for aging parents. This poll also found significant lack of trust in government—a hurdle that progressives must overcome if they are to pass any major initiatives on health care, energy or transformative issues.
