Tax Receipt: Knowing What You Paid For

Author: Jim Kessler, Tess Stovall
In The Middle Class Program

Abstract

The typical working-age taxpayer will pay just over $13,000 in federal income and payroll taxes for 2007, and they aren’t going to get a receipt. So Third Way decided to give them one – we found out what that $13,000 buys in government.

Description

As it turns out, $593.48 went to the war in Iraq. $74.93 covered the space program. The Peace Corps? A buck fifty-three. The waste that we spend on servicing the interest on our gigantic national debt? The average taxpayer spent $1,085.29 on that.

Included in the memo is a detailed spreadsheet that covers 64 specific programs and what the typical working age taxpayer – a taxpayer with about $64,000 in household yearly income – contributed to those things. As tax day looms tomorrow, we hope you’ll take a look.
